Tom Perrotta grew up in New Jersey and currently lives in Boston where he teaches expository writing at Harvard University. Perrotta received his B.A. in English from Yale University and his M.A. in Creative Writing from Syracuse University.
The theme of ordinary people trapped in lives they never imagined runs throughout Perrotta's novels; from the aspiring-rock-stars-turned-wedding band in The Wishbones to the disillusioned high school teachers in Election. Success for Perrotta's characters is always just out of reach, and the world is always just outside of their control. Characters that seem destined for success, like Election's Tracy Flick, serve as foils to the true protagonists, constant reminders of the unfairness of life.
Perrotta moved into the public eye when Election was made into the much-beloved film starring Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon.
