J. Malcolm Garcia was born in Chicago in 1957. He has degrees in English and Social Work and earned a masters in journalism in 1997 from UC Berkeley. As a reporter, he has worked in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Chad, Sierra Leone, Haiti, Honduras, Bolivia and Argentina.

His work has appeared in a variety of magazines and newspapers and has been included in The Best American Travel Writing, The Best American Unrequired Reading, and is forthcoming in McSweeney's.
