Christine Balint was born to Hungarian immigrants in 1975. Since childhood she has known that she wanted to be a writer. As a teenager she won a number of prizes for her short stories and several of her poems were published. The Salt Letters was short-listed for the 1998 Australian/Vogel Literary Award. In 1998 Christine was awarded an Editorial Fellowship and a Mentorship Fellowship at Varuna Writers' Centre. She was awarded a Queen's Trust Scholoarship in 1999. In 2000 she was shortlisted in the Sydney Morning Herald's Best Young Novelists of the Year Award.
